There are roughly 257,000 animal feeding operations in the US alone. Many of these operations house hundreds, if not thousands, of birds (poultry) and animaPoultryls (livestock), which when concentrated in a small area can create hazardous amounts of ammonia. Rat and mice testing is also a prime application for ammonia monitoring. It is a well-known fact that ammonia negatively affects the heaRat & Mouse Testinglth/immune system of small animals and as such, experiments or tests may be negatively skewed when ammonia, as a variable, is not monitored and controlled. To sample the centralized outflow air of a rack of cages does not allow researchers to accurately track and factor what, if any affect, ammonia may have had on individual experiments.
